چکیده

In this work, we consider transmissions over block fading channels and assume that adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) and hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) are implemented. Knowing that in high signal-to-noise ratio, the conventional combination of HARQ with AMC is counterproductive from the throughput point of view, we adopt the so-called layer-coded HARQ (L-HARQ). L-HARQ allows consecutive packets to share the channel and preserves a great degree of separation between AMC and HARQ; this makes the encoding and decoding very simple and allows us to use the available/optimized codes. Numerical examples shown in the paper indicate that L-HARQ can provide significant throughput gains compared to the conventional HARQ. The L-HARQ is also implemented using turbo codes indicating that the throughput gains also materialize in practice.

K-NN Based Adaptive Modulation Coding (AMC) and Incremental Redundancy Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (IR-HARQ) in MIMO

In Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology, a cross layer design enhances the spectral efficiency, reliability and throughput of the network. In this paper, a cross-layer approach for k-NN based Adaptive Modulation Coding (AMC) and Incremental Redundancy Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (IR-HARQ) in MIMO is proposed. The proposed cross layer approach connects physical layer and data lin...

Throughput Maximization by Adaptive Threshold Adjustment for AMC Systems

The mechanisms of adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) and hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) are two important schemes in modern wireless communication systems. In practical system design, the AMC mechanism is usually implemented with fixed switching thresholds for the modulation and coding schemes (MCS), and suffers from performance degradation. To mitigate this problem, a novel algorithm...

Analytic Prediction of OFDM Performance with a Covert Interferer

This paper addresses how to hide the transmission of information within the RF environment created by packet-based broadband wireless (infrastructure) networks, like LTE. The desire to hide the transmission of information has existed since antiquity; including concealing the very existence of transmissions, since exposing the presence of transmissions may expose the location of the sender or an...

Design of Incremental Redundancy Hybrid-ARQ with Rate Compatible LDPC Codes

Mobile communication systems have been adopting link adaptive transmission schemes such as adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) and hybrid-ARQ (HARQ). Several wireless mobile communication systems have considered highly efficient incremental redundancy (IR) hybrid ARQ scheme. However IR-HARQ with LDPC codes has not been specified yet. In this paper, we propose an IR-HARQ scheme with rate compat...

Design of Adaptive Modulation and Coding Scheme for Truncated Hybrid ARQ

It has been known that adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) at the physical layer can be combined with a truncated automatic repeat request (ARQ) at the data link layer so as to maximize the spectral efficiency under prescribed delay and error performance constraint. In this paper, we consider the same joint design approach when incremental redundancy-based hybrid ARQ (IR-HARQ) is associated wi...
